First they give you good luck, but if you don’t pick them up you get bad luck. Gradually, you find more and more pennies until you can’t possibly pick them all up at which time the devil claims his due and pulls you down to Hell.

Alternatively, picking up a random penny probably isn’t worth the risk you will put your back out. Or maybe that’s just me.
